Eco Cottage

Come and relax at our Eco cottage/writers retreat.

The cottage runs on either solar or wind turbine power depending on the weather. Your water is rain water provided using no electricity to pump it. The hot water is heated either by solar or fire from the log burner with no electrical or gas back up. This might inconvenience some people but it is truly an experience in living in harmony with nature.

You will have complete privacy in your cottage though there will be normal farm and gardening activities happening outside around you. You can feel free to use the cottage as a hideaway or become involved in whatever gardening or farm activities are happening at the time.

The Eco Cottage features:

  • One queen size bed, bedroom, kitchen lounge combined and separate bathroom.
  • French doors from the bedroom give a view of the front lawn and garden.
  • The toilet is a modern Kakapo composting toilet.
  • A landline phone available for use for local calls (no mobile phone access).
  • Stereo and tape deck provided.  There is no TV but you are welcome to bring a laptop as there are some DVDs provided.
  • Some of the furniture has been handmade by Andrew out of recycled Rimu, a native hardwood timber, whereas other furniture is antique.

This is a self catering cottage and in season we may be able to sell you some organic vegetables, salad greens, free range eggs and milk products. A selection of condiments are provided as well as organic tea, herbal teas, coffee, sugar, blueberries, farm made jams, butter, marmalade and honey from our bees.

The farm is on 10 acres/4.2 hectares, relatively self sufficient and organic. Just 30 min drive from Wellington’s CBD, 45 min from the airport and 20 min from Upper Hutt.
There is a strawbale café within walking distance open Wednesday – Sunday.

Carolann runs classes from the farm on a variety of self sufficient subjects from spinning the sheep’s wool, beekeeping, preserving, making herbal medicinal lotions and potions, raising backyard chickens, cheese making, organic vegetable gardening, soap making to living on alternative power plus much more. Carolann is the author of Mastering the Art of Self Sufficiency in New Zealand.
